Recent export-control restrictions placed on Anthropic’s Fable 5 frontier model in the United States, (now reportedly partially lifted as at the end of June 2026), have intensified debate around who will be allowed to access frontier AI systems as they continue to scale given the implications for sub-national power dynamics and geo-politics. The episode points to a wider policy shift: models of comparable capacity may increasingly be treated as strategic infrastructure, with access shaped by national security priorities, licensing regimes, and geopolitical competition.
For advocates of open technological progress, this raises difficult questions. If advanced AI becomes concentrated among a small group of states, corporations, and approved institutions, access to machine intelligence could become another axis of inequality, producing fears of a “permanent underclass” excluded from the cognitive and economic advantages these systems may confer.
The situation also complicates familiar techno-utopian narratives. AI is often imagined as a broadly empowering tool, but frontier restrictions suggest a future in which intelligence itself becomes bordered, rationed, and weaponised. For Metapunkt, these developments reinforce the need to examine not only what futures AI can generate, but who gets to participate in generating them.

Stochastic Dreams was presented at Galleri KiT in Trondheim as part of Meta.Morf 2026 in April, marking the culminating exhibition output of Forward Remembrance: Exploring Latent Utopias. The exhibition brought together the research project’s core concerns: latent reality, generative AI, symbolic systems, collective imagination, and the use of artistic practice to probe how futures become thinkable.
At the centre of the installation was an interactive divinatory apparatus combining the Lubi Board, a pendulum, the ScenSyn narrative engine, and AI-generated imagery. Visitors participated in a form of social dreaming where their choices shaped the world of the installation while also leaving traces for later participants.
The exhibition functioned as artwork, research instrument, and public encounter. It staged future-making as a process shaped by probability, memory, desire, and patterned uncertainty, extending the Forward Remembrance trajectory from speculative workshops and generative theatre into a fully realised installation environment.

With support from NTNU Discovery, the Synesyn framework is undergoing a six-month pilot development phase aimed at moving it from an artistic research apparatus toward a more public-facing platform. The NOK 200,000 grant, awarded in December 2025, supports refinement of the tools developed through Forward Remembrance and carried forward through Metapunkt’s metafuturist practice.
During the grant period, work focuses on strengthening Synesyn’s core architecture, improving stability and performance, refining the user interface, and preparing the framework for use beyond the original research context. The pilot also supports the development of AI copilots for structured foresight facilitation, along with planned tests involving cultural and municipal partners.
By the end of the six months, the goal is to have a more usable, traceable, and scalable version of Synesyn, with clearer open-core licensing and contributor pathways. This work helps test whether the framework can support real-world collaborative imagination, design fiction, and future-making processes outside the studio or exhibition setting.

Developed with support from the Metapunkt Foundation, ScenSyn, an innovative AI-powered platform that revolutionizes scenario creation and interactive storytelling is set to be deployed publicly for the first time in October 2024 in an installation titled 'Playing Future Narratives' created by - Futuring Together - a research group at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology convened to explore common interests in narrative driven approaches to envisaging and engaging with different notions of the future.
ScenSyn's AI assisted Scenario Builder guides users through crafting detailed scenarios with settings, objectives, characters, and plot twists. Once created, users can step into their scenarios, roleplaying as one character while the AI controls the others. The platform adapts to user choices, allowing for dynamic narrative progression through character actions or direct story instructions. Suitable for creative professionals, educators, and business strategists alike, ScenSyn offers versatile applications from storytelling to professional training simulations. With an upcoming multiplayer mode, ScenSyn is set to redefine collaborative scenario exploration and decision-making practice across various fields.
